Introducing Director Tools.
Today NovelAI is receiving a handy new set of tools to make your life as an artist easier!
Remove BG:
First off, we have Remove BG (Remove Background), which, as the name implies, easily removes a background from any given picture, and even generates missing or blocked out pieces and parts.
This tool provides three different stages of generations:
- Stage 1: the result of using that generated image as a mask over the original image. This may feature some parts that were present in the image but shouldn’t be present in a cutout. (falling petals, etc.)
- Stage 2: a Generated version that focuses on the removal of the background but filling in details, pieces covered by text, missing hair, or the aforementioned petals which should not be a part of your cutout.
- Stage 3: a blending of the two.
Line Art
Revert your image to the line art stage! Would you like to see the AI interpret the Line Art of your given image? Now you can!
Sketch
Create a sketch version of your art!. Peruse the very earliest conceptual iteration of a work. Maybe you can even learn a thing or two about the composition of your image!
Colorize
Ever find yourself with some lineart and no idea what to do with it? Get a quick interpretation of how the AI would color it to fuel your inspiration!
Emotion
Ever wanted to change the expression of a character? Working on your very own Visual Novel? Prepping a new profile picture but the expression just doesn’t fit the mood? Now you can easily generate a wide range of emotions!
Declutter
Forgot to save an image in layers? Generated some pesky accidental text? Want to clean up a comic filled with annoying placeholder speech bubbles? No problem! The Declutter tool can trim any unwanted floating text, objects, or other visual noise from your image.

Limitations
Very low or very high resolutions are not recommended.
Remove BG:
Generation speed is considerably lower.
Sketch:
Line Art to sketch tends to work better than full work to sketch.
Emotion:
- Changes are not always limited to the face.
- This functionality is designed for humanoid 2D anime/non-realistic style faces. Other styles might or might not work and may look uncanny.
- If a specific eye or hair color is desired, make sure that it is easily visible in your reference image (i.e. no random blank eyes or baldness) or add it to your prompt
- Small faces will not work as well as faces that take up a large part of the image (e.g. “upper body” type shots).
- Low resolution images will not work well. Standard NovelAI Diffusion V3 resolutions or higher are recommended.
- Low contrast images can have issues. In that case, turning up the contrast should help.
- Faces at an angle will not work as well as straight-on faces. Profile images are unlikely to work at all.
